This summer IU 8 is offering an outstanding opportunity for our local youth. We are seeking students in Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties aged 16 (or almost 16) to 18 to apply to join us for a free training course to become a certified drone pilot. This is open to 12 students per class, one held at Northern Bedford High School (June 8-12) and the other at Tyrone Area High School (June 22-26).
Participants must attend all five days of the course. Upon completion, they will receive a pre-paid voucher to take the FAA Unmanned Aircraft certification test at the Johnstown airport or other approved facility.
Funding is made available by the Grable Foundation, and part of our grant requirements is to have the newly certified pilots serve as local drone ambassadors by assisting a local event by capturing aerial footage and sharing their new knowledge with younger student. Details will be shared as part of the course.
After passing the test and notifying us of their Ambassador plans, they will receive an FAA-approved drone ($600 value).
We are thrilled to help uplift students and the aviation industry in our area! Please see the flyer of details. Applications are due by April 24 and accepted students will be notified by April 30.
