The service of Interagency Coordination actively works to build and enhance collaborative relationships between the education system, families, and various community agencies. The intent of this effort is to promote continuity of care and communication in order for students and families to benefit from available services within their community, in the least restrictive environment. The Intensive Interagency Coordinator (IIC) can assist in individual case resolution as well as help districts build capacity to serve students with complex needs. The role and function of the IIC can be adapted to meet individual needs of districts and students. Intensive Interagency Coordination is IDEA funded and available at no cost to IU8 supported districts upon request. Importantly, pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations and Cordero v. Commonwealth litigation, Intensive Interagency Coordination services are mandated when a student with a disability has waited or is at risk of waiting more than 30 days for an appropriate educational placement.
Potential roles of ICC include but are not limited to:
- Serve as a liaison between community agencies, families, and school entities in order to provide continuity of services.
- Serve as a resource for gathering and sharing pertinent information for schools, agencies, and families.
- Assist districts build capacity to service students with disabilities via review of internal and external supportive services and facilitation of subsequent of strategic planning.
- Provide or assist to secure skills training for educational staff in the areas of mental health or servicing students with disabilities in schools.
- Assist in the development and coordination of interagency, family, student and school linkages.
- Ensure that all service options and support services are explored and provided.
- Assist in completion or acquisition of necessary applications/eligibility requirements.
- Provide educational representation on a variety of multi-disciplinary community agency teams such as Student Assistance Programs (SAP), Child and Adolescent Service System Program (CASSP), Behavioral Health Services Children’s Model Teams, Suicide Prevention Task Force, Children & Youth Services, Department of Health, County School Attendance Task Force.
