Up one levelATOMS Scholars Program
Appalachia IU 8 is conducting the Advanced Training for Outstanding Mathematics and Science (ATOMS) Scholars Program again this summer. These are hands-on, high level, intensive science and mathematics experiences for very able mathematics and science students who will be completing grades 2 through 8 this school year.
Central PA Science Fair
The Central PA Science EXPO and Fair is an opportunity for students in grades 1 through 8 from Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Somerset and the surrounding counties to show an investigative project they have completed.
Interscholastic Reading Competition
During the fall and spring of each school year, Appalachia Intermediate Unit sponsors the Interscholastic Reading Competitions.
Regional Middle School Computer Fair
The Regional Middle School Computer Fair is sponsored by Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 and held annually during the month of February. Public and non-public schooled students currently in grades 6 through 8 are eligible to participate.
Regional High School Computer Fair
The Regional High School Computer Fair is hosted by Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 and Penn State Altoona at the Community Arts Center during the week of Spring Break. Public and non-public schooled students currently in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to participate.
Bedford/Blair Scholastic Quiz League
Beginning in the fall of 2006 Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 will sponsor the Bedford / Blair Scholastic Quiz League. High school teams from the districts in these two counties will have the opportunity to test their knowledge during meets with other league teams.
Star-Lab Portable Planetarium
The Star-Lab Portable Planetarium was purchased by a consortium of fourteen school districts within the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 area. This large inflatable planetarium is used by the districts as an instructional aide to teach students concepts such as: Astronomy, Plate Tectonics, Greek Mythology, Navigation, and Coordinate Systems.

Preschool Early Intervention Services
Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 Preschool Services provide special education services for qualifying children aged 3-5 who are not yet eligible for kindergarten. A Multidisciplinary Team evaluation determines if a child is eligible for services; that is, exhibiting at least a 25 percent developmental delay and in need of specially designed instruction.
