Visually Impaired Support Program
Educational Programs & Services

Services available through the VIS Program:

  • In-home intervention for infants and preschoolers and their families.
  • Parent training and support.
  • Individualized instruction in the use of Braille, adapted materials and assistive devices.
  • Consultation with school personnel about visual impairment, assistive technology, and environmental/curricular adaptations.
  • Assistance to school nurses with vision screening of preschoolers and children with multiple disabilities.
  • Functional Vision Assessments, Learning Media Assessments, and Assistive Technology Evaluations for students identified as visually impaired.
  • Orientation and Mobility evaluation and instruction by certified instructors for students who are blind.
  • School-to-adult life transition services.

To refer a student with a visual impairment for VIS services:

  • Complete a VIS referral form.
  • Attach proof of visual impairment from an optometrist and/or ophthalmologist (eye specialist).
  • If feasible, attach a "permission to evaluate" signed by the parent.
