Visually Impaired Support Program
Educational Programs & Services

Services available through the VIS Program:
- In-home intervention for infants and preschoolers and their families.
- Parent training and support.
- Individualized instruction in the use of Braille, adapted materials and assistive devices.
- Consultation with school personnel about visual impairment, assistive technology, and environmental/curricular adaptations.
- Assistance to school nurses with vision screening of preschoolers and children with multiple disabilities.
- Functional Vision Assessments, Learning Media Assessments, and Assistive Technology Evaluations for students identified as visually impaired.
- Orientation and Mobility evaluation and instruction by certified instructors for students who are blind.
- School-to-adult life transition services.
To refer a student with a visual impairment for VIS services:
- Complete a VIS referral form.
- Attach proof of visual impairment from an optometrist and/or ophthalmologist (eye specialist).
- If feasible, attach a "permission to evaluate" signed by the parent.
