Corrective Reading
Educational Programs & Services > Cresson Secure Treatment Unit

Corrective Reading is a one-to-one, teacher-to-student directed program designed to improve the reading skills of below-level readers at CSTU. By administering specific reading assessment tests and drawing upon feedback from individual classroom teachers, students are identified as candidates for the Corrective Reading Program. A weekly schedule is followed in which students in the program are pulled from individual classes to work with the reading teacher. "Bottom-up" or "phonics" instruction along with "Top-down" or "whole word" instruction is utilized in improving the decoding, word recognition, and comprehension skills of our learners.

The Corrective Reading Program proved extremely successful in its first year as a course at CSTU. Students were improving at least one grade level in reading ability within 6 months of entering the program. Also, students in the program showed considerable improvement in all of their other subject areas.Teacher: Brenda Mullen
