- Check to see if any teachers need any supplies or equipment.
- Check with all the teachers to find out who needs assistance or which teachers are planning to visit other classrooms. Teacher's who are going to visit other classes will need a lab assist to teach their class while they are observing others. They may not need your help when you ask, so ask often or secure a time they will need you.
- Work with the students and become fimiliar with what they are doing. This may involve helping the children in experiments or other ways the teacher feels is appropriate.
- Help children. It is important that you become acquainted with the arrangement of the classrooms, bathrooms and office as well as the cafeteria and auditorium (if they are being used). All lab assistants should be in the halls during class breaks. Children may need directions to their next class, a telephone, rest rooms, etc.... Help them with whatever problem arises.
- All lab assistants are to monitor the students during lunch. Some sites do not have a lunch period others have a lunch break that will provide an opportunity for students to go out on the playground after eating. Students must finish eating and dispose of their trash before going outside. Any students needing to visit the restroom during lunch must return to the cafeteria. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY STUDENTS LEAVE THE CAFETERIA AND GO TO A CLASSROOM BEFORE THE APPOINTED TIME!
- When supplies are sent to the school. Unpack the materials and take them to the teacher who has requested the supply.
- Communications between teachers and Joan Conway. Anything the teachers need to get to Joan or vice versa.
- Each day of the program one lab assistant will be responsible for monitoring the drop off and dismissal of the students (this duty will be rotated and the lab assistants will decide who is taking the duty each day). The appointed assistant will stand at the dismissal area and remain at this station until every child has been picked up. If a parent has not arrived within 10 minutes of the dismissal time, the student's parent or alternate contact person will be called.
- Any problems -- Contact Joan Conway. If Joan is not available, call Crystal Sparacio, the Special Projects Office Assistant. Office Phone Number: (814) 940-0223.
There will be several lab assistants located at each site and time periods when you will not be needed for specific duties. During these times you are encouraged to observe the teachers in action, especially the teachers who will be having lab assistants teaching for them. These teachers have been chosen because of their subject expertise and excellence in teaching techniques. They are excellent role models for all education and/or science and math majors.
