ATOMS Staff Appearance and Conduct Guidelines
Curriculum, Training & Development Services

In order to project and maintain a professional image of the ATOMS Scholars Program, staff members are expected to utilize appropriate judgment in dress and appearance while representing this program.

The following are not permitted at host sites:

  • Radical hairstyles (ex: unnatural hair colors, spiked hair, Mohawks, etc...)
  • Visible Body piercing other than the ears
  • Clothes that are too revealing (i.e. low-cut, short, tight, see-through, exposed midriff, etc.)
  • Clothes that have information printed on them that is inappropriate for young readers (i.e. alcohol slogans, vulgar phrases, violent pictures, etc...)
  • Gym trunks or very brief shorts*
  • Pants, shorts, or shirts that would create the impression of having an unkempt, untidy, or rumpled appearance (i.e. holes or tears in them, etc...)
  • Clothes that would create a safety hazard
  • Shoes that expose the wearer to possible injury (i.e. flip flops, spiked heels, loose sandals, etc...)

The following is permitted at host sites:

  • Long pants, denim jeans, skorts, and shorts (* see above)
  • Dress Shirts, Sweaters, Tee shirts or sweatshirts (ATOMS Tee shirts are preferred)
  • Sneakers, shoes, clogs, and sandals that have straps to secure them on the feet
  • Comfortable clothing that permits the wearer to perform his/her duties in a safe and effective manner
  • Any clothes which are acceptable for staff members at a public school.

Each member of the ATOMS Staff is requested to adhere to the following procedures:

  • On the first day, all teachers are expected to be at the school at least ten minutes prior to the student orientation.  In other words, 20 minutes prior to the first class
  • After day one, all teaching staff will be in their classrooms at least ten minutes prior to the beginning of their first class.
  • Lab Assistants, who are on door duty, are expected to be at the site ten minutes prior to the beginning of the first class and must stay until all students have been picked up.  Students arriving more than five minutes early should be kept in a central area (i.e. lobby, cafeteria) until all teachers are in their rooms.
  • All Lab Assistants, not on door duty, are expected to be at the host site a minimum of five minutes prior to the start of the first class.
  • Any staff member who has receipts for supplies purchased to use in the program, must turn the receipts in to the ATOMS Office Personnel within ten days of the close of the last program at which he/she was assigned to work.  On the back of the receipt, list the name of the staff member who is to be reimbursed, the total amount due, date, and for which site the supplies were purchased.  If only certain items on the receipt were for the ATOMS Program, circle or highlight the items so we know which ones we are reimbursing.  Late receipts cannot be reimbursed.
  • All staff members are required to familiarize themselves with the safe schools guidelines adopted several years ago so they know how to handle certain situations and what to do in case of an emergency.
