Non-Public Reading
The IU08 administrators and teachers view reading as an integral part of the curriculum. Since the teaching of reading is one of the most important tasks of the school, it is the responsibility of all involved to consistently work toward the goal of helping students to develop skills and techniques which coincide within the perimeters of reading. Learning to read with understanding is a critical element in the area of effective communication and it is essential that educators provide opportunities that include "tailor made" objectives in order to most effectively reach the individual needs of those they work with on a daily basis.
In order to provide additional opportunities the Intermediate Unit offers a nonpublic reading program based on this philosophy with three major goals:
- To stimulate and enrich small groups of students in the process of reading
- To develop independent study skill since reading is a life-long process
- To provide experiences to enhance self-concept and the desire to read
The act of reading can be a key to the exploration of a student's inner life, a means by which he/she can make wise decisions. Helping students reach their potential will enable them to function with more success in every aspect of their lives. That, in essence, is the goal of this program.
Non-Public Information about Drug Free Schools
The primary goal of the Safe and Drug Free Schools is to provide all students with safe, disciplined, drug free and violence free schools. The Safe and Drug Free Schools and Community Advisory Council collects data from principals as well as other relevant sources and develops goals, objectives, and activities based on identified needs. The Council attempts to develop a comprehensive program that looks at curriculum policy, school climate, and intervention strategies. At the conclusion of the year, the SDFS Community Advisory Council will conduct an end-of-year review of the data collected to determine the effectiveness of all program activities.
Non-Public Guidance
The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 08 offers guidance counseling services. The guidance counselor is a person that views guidance as preventive and continuous rather than corrective and remedial. The program is concerned with meeting the needs of all children as they progress through the developmental changes that occur during their school years. Students needing special assistance will receive services individually or in small groups. Developmental guidance aims for the development of the total person, that is, the development of every aspect of the child's being, to their fullest potential for the benefit of the child as well as society.
