Designing Science Professional Development Survey
A survey has been designed to support our Intermediate Unit in designing professional development opportunities to meet the needs of all science teachers. We are requesting that all science teachers, K-12, complete the survey on or before Friday, May 12, 2006. Your input will support the IU in planning professional development workshops that will support you in classroom instruction and increasing student achievement. Winter/Spring 2006 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Courses

IU8 offers graduate-level Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses (formerly called in-service courses) for professional educators to take as they work toward their Level II certification or Master's Equivalency. Undergraduate courses, as well as courses for Act 48 contact hours only, are also provided.

PAAN - Pennsylvania Arts Assessment Network
The Pennsylvania Department of Education and Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 have developed this section of the Pennsylvania Arts Assessment Network (PAAN), which is one of the many resources on http://keyarts.ws. It supports arts and humanities educators and their need to know more about PSSA and Arts assessment.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Effective September 1, 2004, teachers assigned to teach English language learners (ELLs) must hold an ESL (English as a second language) Program Specialist certificate. Only those holding this certificate will be permitted to teach ESL classes in Pennsylvania starting September 1, 2004.

Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer classes leading to certification as an ESL Program Specialist, K-12.

The following requirements, as set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, must be met before you are permitted to register:
  1. You must be employed by a public school entity.
  2. You must hold a PA Level I or Level II certificate or its equivalent from another state.

Classes for this certification are graduate level courses. Those individuals successfully completing the requirements will receive 12 graduate credits. Please note: Recent changes at PDE have upgraded certificate requirements for this certification from 10 credits to 12 credits for all intermediate units, colleges, and universities.

PA Mountain Service Corps (AmeriCorps)
The PA Mountain Service Corps (PMSC) is a branch of AmeriCorps. Members serve at non-profit agencies, including schools, in the 12 surrounding counties. Corps members perform a variety of activities, including tutoring and mentoring of K-12 students, teaching GED classes, and mentoring at-risk youth.

Curriculum Network Meetings

The purpose of the Curriculum Network is to build awareness of and discuss current issues and innovations in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and professional development. The network meets four to five times a year to address curriculum items of interest to districts in our region.

IU8 High School Speech League

The IU8 High School Speech League conducts forensic competitions for several hundred high school students in approximately 25 school districts. Competitions run from September to May each year.
On-Site Training Sessions
At districts' request, Curriculum Department staff provide various training sessions on-site. Sessions provided have been focused on writing curriculum, developing benchmarks, leadership, standards-based instruction, designing local assessment plans, reading in the content area, STEEP training, and various other current issues and trends.
Principals Forums
As part of IU8's Leadership Development Initiative, IU8 offers professional development activities specifically for principals in the four-county region. Topics and speakers are chosen with input from principals.
Reading Recovery® Consortium
The IU8 Reading Recovery® Consortium involves over 20 school districts in the IU8 region. The Reading Recovery® Program targets students in the lowest 20% of first-grade reading classes and provides intensive, one-on-one remediation with a specially trained Reading Recovery® teacher. All teachers trained in Reading Recovery® participate in continuing professional development every year in the form of Continuing Contact classes.
SuperConference for Student Leaders
Each year, about 10 Cambria County public schools, 7 nonpublic schools, and approximately 165 secondary students participate in the SuperConference for Student Leaders. Local community leaders in education, business, law enforcement, and medicine volunteer to speak to students who have been recognized by their teachers for their leadership potential.
Teacher Induction Consortium
The purpose of the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 Teacher Induction Program is to help beginning teachers to function more effectively and grow professionally during their first year in the teaching profession. The program provides beginning teachers with a series of five trainings that focus on current issues in education and the opportunity to network with colleagues. Two other components of the program include a session tailored toward mentors and a second-year program for teachers.
Summer 2006 Professional Development Training Sessions
IU8 conducts a variety of training sessions based upon current research and the needs of our districts. During this summer, trainings will be offered on a variety of subjects such as: ESL teaching methods, inclusion, DIBELS, content area, technology, and crisis intervention.
