Effective September 1, 2004, teachers assigned to teach English language learners (ELLs) must hold an ESL (English as a second language) Program Specialist certificate. Only those holding this certificate will be permitted to teach ESL classes in Pennsylvania starting September 1, 2004.
Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer classes leading to certification as an ESL Program Specialist, K-12.
The following requirements, as set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, must be met before you are permitted to register:
- You must be employed by a public school entity.
- You must hold a PA Level I or Level II certificate or its equivalent from another state.
Classes for this certification are graduate level courses. Those individuals successfully completing the requirements will receive 12 graduate credits. Please note: Recent changes at PDE have upgraded certificate requirements for this certification from 10 credits to 12 credits for all intermediate units, colleges, and universities.
